01
Context
Education financing involves students, co-applicants, institutions and lenders — each with different information, timelines and levels of comfort with digital processes. The journey existed, but largely offline and document-heavy.
02
Problem
Applicants had no clear view of where their application stood, and every stage depended on manual coordination between operations, credit and partners. Effort scaled linearly with volume.
Before
Manual coordination, limited visibility, effort scaling with volume.
After
Guided digital journey, automated deterministic checks, shared status model.
03
Customer / User
Students and co-applicants applying for higher education loans, plus internal credit and operations teams who process those applications.
04
Discovery
- Mapped the existing offline journey stage by stage with operations teams
- Reviewed drop-off points across application, documentation and verification
- Interviewed internal stakeholders across credit, risk, ops and technology
- Benchmarked digital lending journeys across the category
05
Problem Definition
How might we let an applicant complete a higher education loan journey digitally, end to end, while keeping credit and risk controls intact?
06
Goals & Success Metrics
Adoption of the digital journey
Majority of new applications
Turnaround time
Materially reduced vs. manual baseline
Manual intervention per application
Reduced through automation
Journey completion
Improved stage-to-stage conversion
07
Constraints
- Regulatory and compliance requirements around KYC and lending
- Dependency on third-party service availability
- Existing operational processes that could not be paused
- Partner-specific credit policies
08
Solution
A single guided digital journey with save-and-resume, automated verification for deterministic checks, and a unified operations console giving every team one shared view of the application.

My Role
- Owned the product end to end, from problem definition to launch
- Wrote PRDs, journey specs and acceptance criteria
- Ran discovery with operations, credit, risk and technology
- Coordinated third-party integration scoping and UAT
- Defined success metrics and post-launch instrumentation
13
Key Decisions & Trade-offs
Automate deterministic checks first
Automate rule-based verification before touching judgement-based steps.
Trade-off: Slower headline automation number, but no dilution of risk controls.
Ship the core journey before edge cases
Launch the highest-volume applicant path first, handle exceptions in ops.
Trade-off: Ops carried a temporary manual load in exchange for an earlier launch.
One status model for everyone
Applicant-facing status derived from the same state machine ops uses.
Trade-off: More upfront modelling effort; far fewer 'where is my application' queries.
14
Execution
Discovery
Journey mapping, stakeholder interviews, constraint framing
Definition
PRD, flows, integration scope, success metrics
Build
Iterative delivery with engineering and design in agile sprints
UAT
Scenario-based testing with ops, credit and partner teams
Launch
Phased rollout with monitoring and feedback loops
Iterate
Funnel analysis, friction fixes, workflow tuning

16
Reflection
- Instrument the funnel before launch rather than alongside it
- Invest earlier in exception-handling tooling for operations
- Run more moderated usability sessions with first-time applicants
- Digital journeys succeed when operations adopt them, not just customers
- Most 'product' problems in lending are actually workflow and ownership problems
- Clarity of status is a feature — it removes an entire class of support load
